OUR LOGO
There was general agreement among the members of Chimteka Children Support (CCS Sutton) that our logo should be closely connected with Chimteka. The flower chosen belongs to the water-lily family and is common in this part of Malawi. It has been accepted by the people of Chimteka as a symbol of hope in the face of the overwhelming scourge of AIDS and HIV-related illnesses. The community believes that as long as there is water, the water-lily will bloom. They see it as a symbol of unity and love, and remind themselves that if they work together in a spirit of unity and love for the well-being of the orphaned children, suffering will lessen and life will get better for young and old.

The flower is painted on the walls of many houses in the village, the ‘artists’ using black soil and other clays found locally. Some of the children told Catherine Paulin, a member of the Sutton Committee, on her last visit to Chimteka, that a spot is added each time a member of the family dies (frequently as a result of AIDS). Usually, advice for healthy living accompanies the drawing on the houses. In the picture below, young mothers are reminded of the value of breast-feeding their infants. Our hope is that, with the support of the international community, fewer spots will be added to this symbol of a better future for the people of Malawi.
