The flower is painted on the walls of many houses in the village, the ‘artists’ using black soil and other clays found locally. Some of the children told Catherine Paulin, a member of the Sutton Committee, on her last visit to Chimteka, that a spot is added each time a member of the family dies (frequently as a result of AIDS). Usually, advice for healthy living accompanies the drawing on the houses. In the picture below, young mothers are reminded of the value of breast-feeding their infants. Our hope is that, with the support of the international community, fewer spots will be added to this symbol of a better future for the people of Malawi.
