Houses in Malawi are mostly made of traditional materials, grass, wood and clay
The typical rural house is 6-8 square metres and comprises 2 rooms, one being the sitting room and the other the bedroom. The house is usually grass-thatched and has no furniture. Cooking and food preparation are done outside the house on an open fire, which is sometimes under a shelter

Health
The estimated number of people living with AIDS in Malawi is 900,000. This is approximately 8% of the population of 11 million. 500,000 Malawians have already died from AIDS. About 80,000 people continue to die every year from the disease and another 110,000 infections occur annually (European Commission. 2004).

Of the children under five years of age in Malawi, nearly one-third is AIDS/HIV-positive. Malawi has 850,000 orphaned children under the age of 18 years, 45% directly due to AIDS death of parents.

Malawi has one of the highest infant and child mortality rates in the world. The 1992 Demographic and Health Survey indicated that nearly half of all children under age five are moderately stunted and about half of these are severely stunted.

The local health centres are most often poorly equipped with lack of transport to hospital
