Goals

Provide the orphaned children of Chimteka (nos. 600), together with the community, with access to good quality clean water, food, basic education, occupational skills training and basic health services

 

 

Water

·         Develop 4 new boreholes at Chikoyi, Chilije and Mtsambeu plus one near volunteer accommodation

·         Provide clean water to within 500 meters of the 21 village communities within  the Chimteka area

·         Provide clean water to 1,000 households, beneficiaries through the provision of 100 water tanks for rainwater harvesting, and shared amongst 10 households

·         Construct water tanks to provide access to safe clean water (from rainfall) for households and to conserve use of water from boreholes

Sanitation

·         Facilitate construction of 521 pit latrines, and some associated drying racks, bath shelters, hand washing facilities  and  garbage pits to clean compoundsIMG_0203

·         Educate the leaders of the community on development objectives of the sanitation project

·         Educate leaders of the community on basic personal and household hygiene practices

·         Conduct community based sanitation awareness raising sessions to target the project beneficiaries and instil a spirit of ownership of sanitation facilities for improved sanitation and behaviour change

·         Provide households with pit latrine slabs and encourage proper maintenance of the provided facilities

·         Facilitate having DFZ’s (Defecation Free Zones)

Food & Nutrition

·         Provide a balanced meal per day for each child attending school and particularly orphaned and other vulnerable children

·         Lobby Mary Meals and build kitchens for making school meals

·         Provide food supplements (in the short term) to combat malnutrition by giving a balanced diet

·         Develop community gardens in each village and the local school to provide self sufficiency  and well balanced meals for orphaned children and school attendees

·         Facilitate visits by  CTC (Community Trained Care) and HAS’s (Health Service Assistants) for regular checks on children under 5  to monitor malnutrition

Agriculture

·         Improved  fertilisers

·         Diversify into the production of drought resistant crops and small scale farm yard animal production

·         Educate new farmers on the various options that are feasible and support them in the establishment of new crop  alternatives to maize and animal production

·         Support projects (crop rotations with leguminous crops) to use alternatives to artificial insecticides

·         Repair the engine in the maize mill

·         Invest in oxen and ploughs

·         Use of improved seeds and green manure and storage facilities for grain

·         Small scale irrigation and water harvesting

Health

·         The main Chiosya clinic serves a catchement of 25,000 people. Facilitate plans to aid refurbishment and extension of this centre.

Skilled birth attendants and more part-time personnel for the Chiosya clinic

·         Examine the efficiency of the existing ambulance at health clinic to rush women with child birth complications and sick children  to the hospital

·         Set up a Health Service at the centre of the Chimteka villages using a room in the Community Hall and have it manned by a government sponsored H.A.S (Health Service Assistants) in order to treat less serious cases and to refer others.

·         Sexual and reproductive health services

·         Investigate, with a view to buying, a motorbike and trailers to take sick people to the clinic from outlying villages. This to be housed at the local health centre.

·         An annual budget for instruments, blankets and other required for clinic; also mosquito nets

·         To combat malaria, particularly amongst the children, by  monitoring need and proper use of mosquito nets, hygienic storage of water, better sanitation, educating families to bring children to clinic/hospital earlier at onset of disease etc.

·         Continue delivery and distribution of ARV drugs in the centre of the villages.

·         Liaise with Mary Rose Project (Lilongwe) and Billy Riordan Trust (Cape MacClear) to develop and implement effective strategies

·         Educate the public on the need/advantages  for children with disabilities to be allowed to attend school

·         Provide to people living with disabilities the opportunity to access education, training and employment in order to participate to the best of their ability in their community

 

·         Provide local delivery of Anti Retroviral Drugs, testing for HIV/AIDs, physio and counselling for those affected by disabilities

·         Protection of damage to health from smoke inhalation though the use of stoves

·         Subsidise the provision of stoves to households caring for orphaned children

Education

·         Support the development of good quality hostel accommodation in a protected environment in close proximity to two of the schools to which many of the children have to travel a large distance

·         Explore the use of more bicycles to get to school

·         Maintain good standard of playground facility

·         Develop youth organisations with the aims and objectives of developing leadership  its members

·         Support the development of sports and cultural groups within the area

·         Provide library at Chimteka Primary school and encourage book clubs where a group of kids each read one book then gather regularly to tell the group about their book, then swap

·         Organise sports days and football matches

Visiting students can participate in all these – lots more ideas

·         Provide adequate quantity and quality of furniture in all the Chimteka Primary schools

·         Maintain the interior of the Chimteka primary schools to achieve an attractive learning environment

·         Establish a system of learning buddies between high performing school children and members of a study club. The clever poorer children could earn enough to pay for fees in secondary school

·         Develop a bursary systems for talented and interested school children who are unable to fund their own second level education

·         Establish a system of teacher assistants in pre-school and primary

Income Generating Activities

·         Promote the uptake of micro finance scheme using revolving loan system which is being set up by the District (get started with teaching girls  tailoring skills) DSCF0123.JPG

·         Protect and enhance the natural and built environment

·         Support and encourage a tree planting programme (model for other communities)

·         Maintain existing and new community facilities such as community hall, preschool, primary schools, water pumps

·         Further develop the capacity of the solar electricity system on community hall

·         Fund the purchase of an external computer modem

·         Visiting students might teach computers

·         Organise workshops on tree planting

·         Lobby for the improvement (develop proper foundation and put down hard core chip) of the 20km of dirt road approaching Chimteka

·         Set up business of broiler chickens

·         Use old chicken khola as shop to sell materials to make latrines

·         Rent community school for local meetings and training

·         Pay person to man the health clinic and possible motorcycle ambulance

·         Develop leadership, supervisory and management skills for enterprise and local /community development

·         Develop vocational and enterprise skills

·         Mobilise and organise members to work in groups / associations and train them in basic principle of group dynamics, leadership roles and functions (without favour)

·         Provide train the trainer skills to achieve wider dissemination of  the knowledge and skills learnt in growth areas

·         Training and mentoring in Business, Sales and marketing of produce from local area

·         Pursue the offer of the girl with tailoring skills and buy more sewing machines
